Whether or not it is permissible to drive after ingesting alcohol
varies with where you live. Where I live it is not permissible unless
you want to spend three non-negotiable weeks in jail and pay a huge
fine, on a sliding scale based on earnings. The legal limit for
alcohol content is such that if you eat yeast bread that wasn't in the
oven long enough you could risk crossing it. Before the limit was
lowered you could have a glass of low-alcohol beer and drive an hour
later. Now you just can't drink, period. You get used to it, and you
have a designated driver, or learn to take the bus or take a cab if
you can't imagine a night on the town without alcohol.
Alcohol and breastfeeding is a topic about which we do not have
conclusive evidence on which to base sweeping recommendations. I have
always maintained that it is misleading to focus on the minimal
alcohol content in milk, rather than on the issue of safety for
children when being cared for by adults who are not sober enough to
drive a car. I would be concerned about any child whose mother wanted
to know it was all right to have two units of alcohol every single
day, because where I live that is very far from the norm for parents
of young children.
