Hi there -

Coming out of lurkdom again to address a couple of topics. The emergency
recommendations to bring along some formula are so misguided. Um, Hurricane
Katrina, anyone? I remember I was pregnant with my second child during
Katrina, and I was paralyzed with fear and angst over the babies who were
formula fed in Louisiana. No clean water + formula can sometimes equal
death. And the black community, a group that has low breastfeeding rates
anyway, was overly represented in this awful situation.

I also remember checking out of the hospital after my first baby, and the
nurse trying to push formula on me. "But what if there's an emergency?" she
asked. It's amazing how logic can get so twisted.

As far as milk drying up during stress, I do wonder if milk supply is
affected during stress. When my second child was 9 weeks old, my 21 year
old stepdaughter was killed in combat in Iraq. The stress level was
absolutely unbelievable, and I did notice dips in my milk supply. I kept
nursing, of course, and it's hard to say what caused what, but I did note a
difference. Perhaps, as someone noted before, the connection is between
letdown and stress and not supply.
