Cathy: I've had these thoughts in my mind for quite awhile. I've been in
lactation for almost 30 years and it used to be that everyone's, including the
breast pump and breastfeeding products companies, top priority was helping
mothers and babies. I have become increasingly disturbed that priorities seem
to have shifted in recent years to sales figures and profit at the expense of
what's best for mothers and babies and the promotion of breastfeeding in its
purest form, which is exclusive - no equipment or products, except as needed
to move toward the goal of exclusive breastfeeding. Even many LCs of my
acquaintance seem to be more concerned, at times, about the bottom line
than the original goal of helping a mom and her baby nurse as exclusively as
possible within the mom's lifestyle. Mothers in the US truly believe they will
not breastfeed successfully unless they have a Boppy, top-of-the-line breast
pump, etc.
Is this phenomenon unique to the US or is it as prevalent in other countries,
too?
A well-known and respected LC friend of mine told me in a recent
conversation: What happened to the business of helping moms and babies to
breastfeed?
