their argument (it
really is their only argument), and it's false. What we need to do is point
this out succinctly
and repeatedly. Something along the lines of "Regardless of the content of
marketing gift
bags, all US hospitals provide formula to mothers and babies who want it.
Taking formula out of gift bags does not deprive families of choices, it
deprives large
for-profit corporations of marketing opportunities.">>

So very well stated, Kerry. And I've not noticed that there is any dearth
of choices among a myriad different formulas in the grocery stores, Supermart
type stores, drug stores. No one has put it behind bars yet, nor required
parents to have a physician's order for it (that might not be too bad). There
is plenty of CHOICE out there. No one is forcing mothers to breastfeed by
taking all the formula away.
Funny that no one uses the same argument to say that we should be giving
hospitalized patients gift bags with Motrin or Tylenol in them to make sure that
they have a "choice." "Mrs. Snigglebotham, your doctor ordered VEX for your
sore nipples."
"VEX? I don't WANT Vex. I want GooeyPaste!! I can't believe my doctor
doesn't give me a CHOICE!"
"Well, you see, we only have Vex on the formulary."
"Give me the phone, I'm calling my congressperson. This is outrageous.
Hospitalized patients should have a CHOICE. And my choice is GOOEYPASTE!!"
"Mrs. Snigglebotham, you can purchase whatever you like when you get home.
The stores have both."
"Doesn't matter, you are depriving me of my CHOICE to use Gooeypaste.
Where's that phone....mumble mumble."
