SUBJECT:	Gastrointestinal Illnesses Associated with a Conference
Event at a
Chicago Hotel: Suspected Norovirus

The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is investigating a
cluster of
gastrointestinal illnesses associated with an international conference
held
at a Chicago hotel. Approximately 40 individuals have complained of
gastrointestinal symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain,
and
nausea. To date, onsets of illness range from late Monday, July 23-
Tuesday, July 24. Stools collected from 3 individuals are positive for
Norovirus Genogroup I by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain
reaction.
Additional laboratory tests are pending.

The conference occurred from Friday, July 20- Monday, July 23.
Approximately 2,300 individuals were involved in this conference from
several states (AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, IA, ID, IL,
IN,
KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, ME, NH, NJ, NM, NV,
NY,
OH, OK, OR, PR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY) and
other countries. Questionnaires have been distributed electronically to
conference attendees. Residents of these states may receive
questionnaires.

CDPH is interested to coordinate stool testing for Norovirus for
additional
individuals identified as being associated with this conference or
hotel.
