In response to the other comments made about the kellymom animation.
Sometimes it helps to develop a little perspective. If you tell the person who is
viewing it to pretend that you are looking over the shoulder of a mom
latching her baby to breast, then the baby is in a sidelying fetal position under
the mother's right arm. I personally like the sidelying football because the
mother can see where the baby's lower lip actually is, and it is a matter of
curling the baby around her right breast. I use this animation and Peter
Mohrbacher's when I am trying to assist a mom on the phone. Both are slightly
different, but both also clearly show that the most important part of the latch
is making sure that you get enough areolar tissue between the baby's lower
lip and mom's nipple. Both also show the chin going deeply into mom's breast,
and mom mainly focusing her hold on the baby's upper back, NOT the head. In
many cases, moms can correct latch on their own, barring other complications
that require more professional assistance. It helps to provide parameters,
but ultimately mothers need to feel confident in their own ability to manage
their breastfeeding experience.
