Just a thought that came to mind after i posted. I had a mom today in the
hospital who despite baby losing 10% and peds advise to supplement "a little",
mom was against this. I was her 2nd baby and was absolutely sure this was
normal and baby was getting plenty, felt her milk was in and this happened to
baby number 2. Just for "fun" I suggested a pre and post weigh as she is
going to be discharged in the morning. been 4 days mom had a c-section.
just like first. Anyway, I weighed baby and told mom to call after the feed.
When I came back she confessed she and the baby had both fallen asleep
after about 20min. okay. so I proceeded to post weigh. The baby had
transferred 4 cc. Mom was a bit shocked and surprised as she thought the
baby had fed well. She went ahead and gave the baby some supplement, and
is now pumping with our hospital grade pump. I know it was one weight, one
time, but wanted to share that even though this baby seemed like it was
turning the corner ie milk in swallows heard via mom, insisting number 1 did the
same thing etc..Someone has to watch these babes who are losing a lot of
weight. I know the peds would have been very disappointed in the hospital LC
staff, had we not "caught this". Mom was open to supplementing after seeing
the weight transfer. Ya, mom used a bottle. Now will be pumping her own
milk and giving that back to baby..
A near miss,
robin
