hello,
i am writing to see if anyone might know of any info out there at all that a
baby born w/ hydronephrosis who is exclusively breastfed need not be put on
antibiotics. i am writing on behalf of myself this particular time, but in my
work as a bfing volunteer for a large hospital here (detroit area) i have
actually worked w/ several moms whose babies were diagnosed w/ this issue. as i
expect i shall run into more in future, i am certain that obtaining info for
my personal situation is going to end up also benefiting the moms i work with
when i am able to share w/ them what i have learned - when needed!
the ob dx'ed hydronephrosis at the 19 wk u/s...he says we are going to keep
an eye on it and do an u/s every few wks. this puts a slight kink in my plans
to switch over to midwife care in anticipation of my 3rd homebirth (as my mw
does not do ultrasounds) but we need to follow the progress of this
complication. at this point it is the left kidney only, 5mm of fluid, kidney enlarged.
bladder, genitals, everything else looks totally normal. (it's another boy -
our 4th!)
since my 3rd son was born w/ some defects (polydactyly and a cpl other minor
genetic anomalies) i consulted our genetic specialist and he recommends
seeing a peds urologist asap for a 2nd opinion and more detailed examination...
at which point i am learning i can still homebirth w/ this issue but if it
doesn't spontaneously clear up prenatally, the baby will need to be admitted to
the hospital a cpl days after birth. my ped would then do scans and tests and
put him on antibiotics until such time as the problem cleared up (they would
give it until 2 yrs to do so on its own - the first 2 yrs on antibiotics !!!
:-O ) or he has surgery to fix it.
oddly enough, even more than the thought of prenatal surgery in the event
the problem worsens during the remainder of the pgc (22 wks now) or the thought
of my 2 yr old having kidney surgery, the thought of antibiotics from birth
until 2 just horrifies me ! i can deal w/ anything else - give birth in the
hospital, let them do tests, let him be admitted...if i knew it was all in his
best interest...but long-term antibiotic use b/c he *might* get
kidney/bladder infections just doesn't sit right w/ me w/out researching all i can.
so my question is, does exclusive breastfeeding offer any extra protection
here? would i have a leg to stand on in asking that he not be put on abx right
at birth b/c he will be given absolutely nothing but the breast for 8ish
mos? any input is greatly appreciated, i'm finding the dr.s i've asked here so
far just stare at me blankly when i've asked !
