Nicole,
It is never harmless to introduce something other then breastmilk to the baby. Karo syrup is not even food-it should not be fed to anyone, ever!!
From your post, I am guessing mom has milk--so the implication is that somehow the baby would be more enticed by karo syrup. If this was indeed
what she was told, then I would definitely find someone else. If this baby is already 6 days old and not even interested in feeding, then
something is very wrong. Why is this baby not able to feed? Someone needs to be looking a whole lot more closely at what is happening for this baby.
Have you suggested CST to mom, since you say the birth was difficult?

Subject: Karo Syrup on the nipple?
I am a LLL Leader and was trying to help a friend who had a difficult bir=
th and=20
breastfeeding experience in another state. I talked to her on the phone =
daily=20
after the birth and everything I suggested she said the LC suggested. Bu=
t=20
she was sending the baby to the nursery at night for a 3-4 hour stretch. =
For=20
some reason they were not telling her that she needed to nurse 10-12 time=
s a=20
day. I thought they had breastfeeding logs. I don't know, never had a=20=
hospital birth.=20
Yesterday she told me that she saw a new lactation consultant at the=20
hospital. Baby is 6 days old.=20=20
The LC told her to express some breast milk on her nipple to entice baby =
to=20
nurse. If that doesn't work, use a little Karo syrup.=20
I was horrified at the thought. I looked online last night and the only=20=
reference I could find was for getting kittens to take a bottle.=20
Does she need a new LC or is this suggestion harmless?
