Welcome to Lactnet, Nanci.
I started out as a La Leche League Leader and Childbirth educator. I
worked for 4 years while raising my children to put my hours together. I
helped my childbirth students with breastfeeding issues, opened my home
to mothers who had breastfeeding problems that could not be solved over
the telephone and referred them to IBCLCs if I was not sufficient help;
and worked in homeless shelters helping mothers with breastfeeding and
other women's health issues. I also read everything I could get my hands
on, saved every penny I made to use to attend conferences and buy
textbooks, and finally, to pay for the exam. A few experienced IBCLCs
(there were far fewer then) let me pick their brains, see their slides,
and follow them around too. And I joined my local lactation consultant
association a year or two before I took the exam to network with local
colleagues and go to their continuing education offerings.
Best wishes on your journey!
Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC NYC
