Hi, Ruth: Thank you for your astute observation that there needs to be a
formal training piece to LC certification and yes, this has been discussed many
times on Lactnet. I feel part of reason Lactation as a profession is in such a
muddle today is because the beginnings are rooted in a lay perspective, which
is LLLI. And the focus continues to be on the lay aspect as we continue our
struggles. The lay component of Lactation has been both a strength and a
detriment. The strength because breastfeeding is an art, the detriment,
because breastfeeding is also a science. When we figure out how to "marry"
these two concepts, we will have succeeded in developing a viable profession.
