Hi Sima,
I had hand, foot and mouth that manifested itself as small white bumps on the
hands, feet and mouth and on my nipple (tips of it and a few on the aerola).
Not sure if my daughter did have them in her mouth, but they did show up on
my breast. They are about the size of a pin head, and white in color, looks
like a pimple but can't squeeze to relieve pus inside. At the time I was not
IBCLC, and hadn't heard of Lactnet, but called many LC's in my area and none
had heard of HFM showing up on the mothers breast. It is a viral infection.
After consulting Dr. Newman, I started using APNO on my breast and it cleared
in 2-3 days. It was extremely painful (my daughter was only about 14 months
and weaning was not an option), I had to use nipple shields to keep my bra
from rubbing on my nipples between feeding and allow air flow.
The good news about HFM is that you are only supposed to get it once. So,
hopefully I won't ever have to deal with it again!
Hope this helps.
Jamie Huddleston, IBCLC
