The article I linked to was the first in a series that has been published in
Breastfeeding Medicine. The last available research on this topic of maternal
supplementation was to supplement mom with 6400 IU, up from the 2000 IU in
this article and waaaaay up from the 400 IU originally and currently
recommended.
There are disease states associated with vitamin D insufficiency as well
deficiency, because of the role of vitamin D in the immune system. For
example, insufficiency has been associated with autoimmune disorders such as
rheumatoid arthritis and MS. Rickets is the tip of the of the iceberg.
The current recommendation on vitamin D supplementation is under revision.
Probably for everyone.
