When a patient comes to an office they sign a paper permitting us to share 
info with their insurer, other HCPs, school (for immunization info).  I 
believe patients sign the same sort of HIPAA form for admission to the 
hospital.  HIPAA was primarily designed to protect pt info for insurance 
purposes.  People have over interpreted it to many ridiculous extremes
