Of course Cathy Genna put this so answer perfectly - I cannot add too much.
I only have personal experience also. My neighbor has twin boys - now 6 -
they had type 1 - 1 1/2 tongue tie. They nursed for a full year with no
problems. I did not know her. I met her when they were 4 yrs old. I immediately
knew they had tongue tie by "their speech" she was besides herself trying to
get her pediatrician to clip them or at least refer her. She desperately
wanted them and her 2 yr old daughter to be clipped. She is from Scotland and
believed it would have been routine there. She finally got it done and was
so relieved to HEAR them speak so much better so fast. Mind you they had 2
years of speech therapy and it was not getting better for them and then one
snip and they are so much better. Actually her daughter is now speaking better
then her older brothers - she was done at an earlier age and we believe that
is why. :) Also my daughter is tongue tied at 7 yrs but not as severe - a
posterior - I only found this out from Dr Coryllos about 2 years ago. ( I
had pain and she had bad vomiting problems early on) Her speech is good -
actually excellent - I truly believe it is because she was nursed for five years
and she really used all the correct muscles in her jaw. If she needed a
frenotomy I would still do it - but so far she is fine. Go Figure!!!! I am a
big proponent of clipping and clipping early. After reading that article from
the speech pathologist - it is evident that anyone can make a claim to
support their believe. I do not think she had all the evidence she should have -
I could have showed her tons of babies with the problem.
