hi,
I am hoping for some information to give to this mother (a friend, who has
given me permission to post). Her daughter, now 5 weeks, (baby #2), leaks
milk out of her nose when mom is feeding is side-lying position. Moms history
is: baby born on July 23, mom sent home but returned to hospital within two
days b/c of heavy bleeding for D&E for 'retained placenta'. Mom did not
experience any change in bleeding and was back in hospital for a 2nd D&E
after one week. In her words, she said her doctor described a condition where
the placenta grew into the uterine wall. During surgical repair her uterus tore
and she lost a fallopian tube as well. After surgery, she is experiencing what
she describes as a hellish C-section type recovery. Mom is still primarily bed-
ridden, and hence this question. Side-lying nursing would seem like a no-
brainer as far as the best way to get baby fed and mom rested, right? Except
whenever baby feeds in a reclined position milk drips out her nose. Baby has
the occasional "wet burp" and weight gains (in oz) are as follows: birth 5.13,
lowest weight 5.7 1/2, last check up (last week at four weeks of age) 8.5.
The baby occasionaly sounds congested in her nose after a feed, but not
consistently. During mom's hospitalization, baby was given mostly bottles of
EBM, with some formula. Baby has come back to breast relatively well, but
gets one or two bottles of EBM daily--more likely so mom can "rest"--per her
husband's insistence. Mom pumps 5-6 oz. (both breasts) at a pumping. No
signs of forceful let-down, no pulling away, gagging, spraying milk etc. Mom is
tandem nursing this baby along with her 2 year old son. Her son has milk
allergies and had been diagnosed with reflux. The baby's pediatrician says that
she thinks the leaking milk is a symptom of reflux in this baby, but mom is not
so sure. None of the other signs of reflux that she experienced with her son
are there. She is wondering if it could be something else, and if so,what?
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Many thanks
Leslie Cree (fingers crossed that Oct. brings good news!)
