I have had a Mom or two over the years who have had this situation occur.
All of them had a viral infection of some sort with a fever, lasting 2 -5
days. Some took OTC meds some not but all of them were back to work Mom's
who were pumping 2 -3 times a day and the babies were not waking every 3-4
hours at night. The Mom's noticed a significant drop in expressed milk so
pumped up their water intake and then their milk disappeared. My
understanding is the excess fluid possibly kicked in the anti-diaretic
hormone (adrenals). Most recovered a good amount of their supply by
decreasing the fluid intake to thirst. And BF every 3 hours at night and
adding 1-2 pumpings per day. Also they took a galactologue if there were
no contraindications. A few of the Mom's went to bed for the weekend with
their babes and did the skin to skin, which can be a challenge with an
older child.
