Nikki: The issue is people, especially us independent Americans, do not want
to be told what to do. We all like to think we are in control and that any
decision made comes from the individual. If I, or her doctor, tell a mom that
she "must not" or "must" _________(insert "command" of choice), I know that
that mother will go home and do exactly what she wants to do. There is a
certain percent of the population who will do the exact opposite of what they
are feeling they are being "told" to do.
All of us want to maintain as much control over our lives as we can. When I
talk to parents, I give them the information, both what they want to hear as
well as some they may not want to hear, and tell them it is up to them to sort
thru this information and make decisions that they feel are appropriate for
themselves and their family. If the information is presented in a non-
threatening or intimidating way, most people will make good decisions. I
continue to be appalled at the number of HCPs (I'm not doc-bashing, Nancy
W. All us HCPs can be just as guilty) who outright threaten parents by their
choice of both verbal and body language!
