Hi,
I'm wondering if there is any new information circulating regarding the care of
the breastfeeding dyad when an infant has blood in his stools. I have a mom
with a 7-week old infant, and was told by her pediatrician to eliminate the
following long list of foods from her diet to alleviate symptoms: dairy, soy, all
animal products (i.e. chicken, beef, turkey, etc.), eggs and gluten. She is
being told that she may only eat veggies, fruits and rice.
Now, I'm no expert in handling this type of situation, but it seems to me that
telling a mother to eliminate this many things from her diet with no end in sight
is basically saying, "just TRY to breastfeed, I dare you". In other words, how
can this be a realistic plan of care?
This mom just called me in tears - her baby has been taking Nutramigen for 7
days, and she has continued to pump. She says she still see occasional spots
of blood in the baby's stool, and has not been OK'ed to resume breastfeeding.
She is desparate, and wonders if this is even worth it.
Ugh - what should I tell her? I can't very well go against her doctor's advice.
Thanks!!
