This article is not bad in the simplified description of the gut protection with regard to sIgA. sIgA works on mucous membranes and via the milk in the gut and in the respiratory tract. It fights infection by binding to microbes so as to interfere with the germ adhering to the gut. It does this without inflammation. The milk oligosaccharides do as well. And many other components block adhesion as well. But he leaves out all the other amazing things in the milk that fight infection and inflammation in the infant. Perhaps we are thinking of other milk components taken into the infant. "Fragments of other milk components such as lactoferrin and lactoferrin itself *were shown* in the urine of the breastfed infant. " This is almost an exact quote from Lars Hansen in this article: _http://www.cirp.org/library/disease/UTI/hanson1/_ (http://www.cirp.org/library/disease/UTI/hanson1/) Also he speaks of lymphocytes and cytokines [interleukin IL-7] from the milk being taken into the infant. He also discusses this in his book Immunobiology of Human Milk: How Breastfeeding Protects Babies where he says the sIgA is not found in the blood. Also you can listen to the 2005 podcasts on the LLLI site by E. Steven Buescher MD on anti-inflammatory and anti-infective characteristics in human milk. _http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInfectiveCharacteristicsofHu manMilk.mp3_ (http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInfectiveCharacteristicsofHumanMilk.mp3) _http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInfectiveCharacteristicsofHu manMilkPt2.mp3_ (http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInfectiveCharacteristicsofHumanMilkPt2.mp3) _http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInflammatoryCharacteristicso fHumanMilk.mp3_ (http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInflammatoryCharacteristicsofHumanMilk.mp3) _http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInflammatoryCharacteristicso fHumanMilkPt2.mp3_ (http://www.lalecheleague.org/mp3/LLL_Podcast_AntiInflammatoryCharacteristicsofHumanMilkPt2.mp3) Mardrey Swenson ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html Mail all commands to [log in to unmask] To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or [log in to unmask]) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet or ([log in to unmask]) To reach list owners: [log in to unmask]
