These two recent posts really jumped out at me. Pam Hirsch said:
"When a doc writes a supplementation order, the MOTHER has the right
to choose which milk (formula or EBM) she will put into her baby and
the route
of administration (syringe, bottle, cup, etc.). MY role is to give
her the
information about her options so that she may make an INFORMED choice."
and Nikki Lee said:
"Yet look what happens when one profession has been given all the
power...........now 1 woman in 3 in the US has her baby cut out of
her; induction has
become the norm, epiduralized labors are the standard. It is amazing
that
breastfeeding is still hanging in there."
Pam is right, but the mother also has the choice to not follow the
doctor's orders. I recently saw a baby six weeks of age and still
under birth weight. This happened because the mother did not trust
the mainstream medical establishment. They have cried wolf too many
times, and now mothers are choosing not to supplement when they
really need to be supplementing. I do not blame anyone. I am just
observing that there is incredible distrust on the part of mothers
and on the part of doctors, often times with good reason. And here
we are doing it too -- we are not trusting others in our profession.
Blind trust is not the answer. I don't know what the answer is. But
I think we all have to start from a place of assuming positive intent
and being extremely careful when judging others.
