This is a high risk situation. There is very likely to be a submucosal cleft, and
sometimes they are difficult to diagnose. MRI is the best option if the baby has
any issues that point to soft palate dysfunction. If the baby is breastfeeding
well, that is great, but I would want to see mom monitor baby's weight gain
and her milk production more closely than usual. It's not unusual to see a
slowly declining milk production because baby is not as efficient.
One of the papers I read recently (don't have the citation, I'm in a laundromat
in Rome getting my lactnet fix while my clothes dry) postulated that the
uvula's function is to lubricate the pharynx. Swallowing solids may be more
difficult, particularly dry ones.
