Kathryn,
I share your feelings of overwhelmed with the reality of the direction of
IBLCE rather perceived or real. It seems to me that those in charge of our
credential are unaware of what an IBCLC is...hence the SoP nonsense. Now it
seems they are unaware of what it means to us to hold hands even for two
days a week with ties to an inudustry we want no part of. Back to the lack
of awareness of what IBCLCs are, do, believe, expect, want, etc. Perhaps
the reality is they just don't know....ignorance and all that. Or perhaps
they do know and there is a plan to change who and what the IBCLC is. Who
knows. They surely do not communicate well. If not for Lactnet I would be
clueless. The truth is, I want to do my job. I like my work. I have
years to go before recertifiying is an issue for me. Hopefully by then the
mess will be sorted out. Someone said that they are all good people and
just don't get it. Well, that is not making me feel any better. All good
people ignorant of the work of IBCLCs should not be in charge of who becomes
one. The SoP issue was a sign for me and the hiring of the interim ED
another sign...what an IBCLC is may indeed be changing. It may not be so
much that I no longer want to be an IBCLC. It may just be that what an
IBCLC becomes is not a description of what I do.
Currently there is just no way to know what the future will be like for the
profession. It is also hard to know what IBLCE plans for the credential
since there is no communication. Fear and anxiety about the future is
partly because the lack of knowledge creates insecurity. Perhaps a formal
response from IBLCE addressing all of the concerns that is actually sent to
the IBCLCs would be a step in the right direction.

Take care,
Pam MazzellaDiBosco, IBCLC, RLC
