My mom was one of the "concerned critics" when my husband and I began
co-sleeping with our daughter when she was born. She's almost four now and
generally sleeps in her bed (a full-size futon so that her little brother
will have room when he's ready to leave Mom and Dad's bed) on her own. Guess
who sleeps with her everytime she visits, though? Nana, of course!
In the workshop our group does on overcoming social/cultural obstacles to
breastfeeding, we recommend that new moms whose parents/in-laws want to
bottlefeed baby (because they experience bottlefeeding as a bonding
activity) suggest that Grandparent take a nap with baby instead.
