The Podee is not a new feeding bottle design. It has been advertised
for years in publications and newsletters aimed at parents of twins,
triplets, and higher-order multiples.
I once overheard two mothers of bottle-fed twins talking. They both
were feeling they'd like to have another baby, because they said that
with twins they'd missed out on the chance to hold their babies for
their formula feedings. One of these mothers described seating her
two babies in their car seats, facing her, while she sat in front of
them and held the two bottles in their mouths. There was no physical
contact, but both babies got to eat at once. Many formula-fed
multiples babies end up with others helping with their feedings, or
propped bottles, or a Podee-type system.
Once the challenges of the early days with multiples get worked out,
breastfeeding is so much easier than bottle feeding! One mother of
twins told me breastfeeding twins even saved her time, as she didn't
need to switch sides halfway through each feeding as she did with a
singleton. Support and help in the early days is key.
And yes, the Podee is very like the artificial feeding systems
available around 1900 that led to illness in many babies.
