I agree. This morning I told someone that it was not a big deal for me
to do something it would have been a huge, miserable ordeal for her to
do. I suggested that if we all tried to design our lives to do lots of
what we do well and happily, the world would function much better. Some
change the world by spending hours meeting with lots of people to make
apparently small changes to policy or practice that change the lives of
many people a little or lot. Others change the world by raising one baby
to be a compassionate person, and if it is their own baby it makes an
incomparable impact on that life and little ripples through all the
lives in which that person has a role.
Others change the world one baby at a time, by helping the relationship
between a mother and baby have a strong and loving foundation. Still
others write, teach, and advocate so that women and families are
empowered and understand that they, too, can make a difference.
All of these people make an enormous difference every day. How do you
choose what you should do? Here is what I consider the right questions:
what matters? What gives me life? How can I make things better?
