"And for those who, like me, are not and do not wish to become nurses, it's a
waste of paper because it doesn't give us anything we didn't have back in the
days when we were "just" Jane Doe Nursing Mom With Lots of Experience."
The process of becoming IBCLC gives us the knowledge and experience to help mothers far better than 'Jane Doe Nursing Mom With Lots of Experience'. I was an experienced breastfeeding mother when I began to study to be an LC and realized how my own easy experiences had not prepared me in anyway to work with the myriad of problems I see as an LC. Besides that, once Jane Doe stops breastfeeding she may not keep up with new breastfeeding research and practice though she may continue to give out advice. IBCLCs a required to stay abreast of current information. Of course a person can take that upon themselves without becoming IBCLC but the only way I have of differentiating myself, to the women I serve, from Jane Doe is my IBCLC. I don't think that the answer is to drop the credential but for all of us IBCLCs to work together to get this SOP dropped.
