>And what the baby
> is fed has life-long health consequences.
So does the way the baby is mothered. If a mother is coerced into
breastfeeding, she may well feel resentment and a baby will pick up on that.
The long-term consequences of a mother doing something solely for her baby
are also significant, just psychological rather than physical. What mothers
need is for us to foster their intrinsic motivation to breastfeed -
something that is only truly possible if we work with the mother on her
reasons for breastfeeding, and helping her have a positive feeling about it
so that she is not only doing it for the baby but also for herself.
