Your post reminded me of a saying I once heard. "Nobody ever always or
never." I think that is applicable here. A previous poster described my
situation - in hospital, 90% inductions, 99% with epidurals, 30% c/sections. I
always give babies the opportunity to self latch, but as she noted, I've got to
watch blood sugars, temps, etc. I try to take my lead from mom. Many seem
anxious to get the baby latched and I've seen some ready to give up if the
baby doesn't do so in 2.3 seconds. Often, I've been the labor nurse for a
number of hours and have some sense of how she feels about being
helped/touched. For me the key is give them time, but intervene if/when
needed. Like you, Winnie, nipple sheilds, formula and such are my last option,
but if that is what it takes to keep her nursing - I do it. Deb
