Diane, in *Breastfeeding, A Guide for the Medical Profession*, Lawrence
states on p.289: "A breastfed baby who vomits blood should have the blood
evaluated for fetal or adult hemoglobin by the Apt test...adult hemoglobin
turns brown; fetal hemoglobin stays pink".

Personally, given the history with this mother & baby, having the blood tested
might narrow the field in terms what to look for. Though this situation may be
ductal in the mother, it may also be physiologic in the baby (oral, gastro, etc.).

Also, I wonder if this mother is using any type of preparation on her nipples
(such as lanolin or other creams or ointments) that may be causing a reaction
in baby.
