Penny,
You might ask them to observe the Leader, her posture and language. How does
she show mothers acceptance and support no matter where they are in their
breastfeeding journey? How does she encourage interaction between the mothers
(mother-to-mother support) especially when they are at different places in
their breastfeeding journeys? What active listening skills can they observe, and
how does that differ from the typical clinical evaluation? Do they see an
advantage to this type of interaction and determining the "root" issue for a
mother?
Also, remember that men are not always welcomed at La Leche League meetings.
So, if you have any male students, you may need to make special arrangements
for them to attend.
Thank you for working so diligently to truly prepare these students to be
caring and well informed,
Laura Wright

Subject: La Leche League and Students
You were all so very generous shepherding my students these past eight weeks
and although I shared I was not continuing in teaching beyond this semester,
I have decided to continue one further semester in the clinical portion
alone. I am not able to add an "assignment" like Lactnet into this course, but I
have manipulated the clinical hours and am requiring they attend a La Leche
League meeting. My reason for writing, I need to create some sort of clever
assignment for this experience. Any ideas? I could ask generic questions
about their experience, but wondered if anyone had any additional suggestions?
Respectfully and Gratefully,
Penny Lane BA, MSN, CNM, IBCLC
