Lynn, don't tell me you were fed milk & corn syrup in 1973!!!
Yikes!
We left China where my parents were missionaries in 1949 and went to
Australia for 2 years. That is where my mother learned about breastfeeding so that
she was able to breastfeed my next sister for 6 months (1952), my brother for
9 months (1955) and my youngest sister for 12 months (1957). She had the
first copy of the Womanly Art published in 1956 or 57.
Now lest you get excited, my mother breastfed my sibs with the help of lots
of cereal and other junk. Mother would have given cereal in the womb if she
could have figured out how. When my sibs had their babies, my phone call to
them was, "Watch out, Mother is coming and she is going to try and talk you
into giving cereal. Smile and ignore it." Bless her heart. Even with
Timothy, my number 3 son and reason I'm an IBCLC, she told me, "But honey, if you'd
just give him a little cereal first, he'll be thirsty and he'll suck
harder!!"
Memories now that make me smile, but were very frustrating at the time.
