Ilene, I'm a fairly new IBCLC, but have had about 25 years of working in
the hospital with nursing dyads. I think the biggest challenge is getting
moms and families to understand that babies will eat when they are ready.
Of course, we're talking normal healthy fullterm babies. After that
initial nursing, they just aren't too excited about it for at least 6-12
hours, and in my experience, 24 hours seems to be the "magic" number when
they really get going.
I also find that brand new mamas have to be given the same info many
times - between birth and pain med and etc, they don't retain info well.
