Nancy and Others: Amen! Parents need to be encouraged to speak up, not
only for their babies, but also for themselves. Not only is that baby hers, but
so is her body. Any decisions made should be made by the mother (and
father) after full disclosure of information by the health care team.
Our hospital went to peds exams in the rooms about 3 or 4 years ago. For the
1st several months, most of the peds were very verbal in their dislike of the
practice, but nursing management stuck to the decision and refused to be
intimidated by the docs. Because of this change in routine, we have happier
moms/babies and happier docs! We were able to provide more
oto/opthalomoscopes for the docs use. They also realized that they actually
saved time by doing the exam while simultaneously talking with parents, which
allowed them to get to the office earlier. They complained there weren't
enough computers/desk space at the nurses' station for charting, etc. and
now everyone benefits from the construction of 2 more computer/desk
stations that can be used by all staff. All in all, it has been a win-win
situation. I strongly suspect that if we were to revert back to exams being
done in the nursery, we would get the same amount of resistance from the
docs as we had in moving exams to the parents' rooms.
