Dear Dr. Wight,
I feel that breastfeeding is usually not a medical issue in the same
way that eating, or making love, or jogging are not medical
processes, even though they all use organs of our bodies. However
you are right that there can be medical issues that arise in
breastfeeding when those organs are not working well, such as in
mastitis or ankyloglossia. I feel that the medical community has a
lot to offer breastfeeding mothers and babies, but primarily through
reassurance that everything usually works well, and when it doesn't
you are there to help just like you do when people become sick or
injured in any other sphere of their lives.
Warmly,
Lynnette
