Dear all:
Just to clarify --- the marketing person where I do support groups is very receptive and
open to hearing ideas about what is appropriate. Nevertheless, grandmothers, fathers,
retail owners, marketing directors, health care practitioners with NO training in
breastfeeding and the formula industry reps themselves have far more legal leeway to
spout incorrect information about breastfeeding than we do to tell our clients PEER-
REVIEWED CONFLICT OF INTEREST-FREE information.
I do not believe that we should be talking about the ethics of using "evidence-based"
information without the clarification that the evidence must be peer-reviewed and free of
conflict of interest. Anything less, is not ethical in my humble opinion.
If someone can work for the formula idustry and take the big bucks from them and not
have their certification yanked under the pretense of "restriction of trade" then what do you
call what is happening to all of us who do try to uphold the ethics, provide "conflict of
interest-free information"?
Best, Susan E. Burger, MHS, PhD, IBCLC
