MRSA: I agree with all the commom sense advise already provided on LACTNET re
MRSA. We don't want to overload a preterm infant with exposure to MRSA, but
we have to assume any infant is already colonized, so it makes no sense to
keep a full-term infant away from a mother with MRSA. As always, good
handwashing is the key - both in the NICU and at home. We have no restrictions on a mom
(MRSA pos or neg) visiting her MRSA colonized infant in our NICU, but we do
try to keep the baby in an isolation room, or cohorted with other MRSA pos
infants.
New test-weighing study: This study has many, many methodoligic flaws and
was rejected by at least one journal before it was published in another. There
are several much better done studies (Meier et al) showing that test-weighing
is a valid tool. Paula Meier has been asked about this study so often that I
believe she was going to write a letter to the editor about it.
