Curious as to others' opinion on this:
Our Community Ed dept received a letter from a mother of a 3 year old. She had taken our breastfeeding class during her pregnancy and was writing to voice her concern that we recommended the Avent pump which she stated "contain bisphenols and could have harmed the baby".
Of course, what we really recommend is breastfeeding, however, inevitably someone in class brings up pumping and going back to work, etc. We try and steer them toward the better pumps and generally had the Avent listed as a good hand pump for occasional pumping (Avent was only making the hand pump at that time) and Ameda or Medela for double pumping.
I called Avent who stated that the product would have to be melted in order for any harmful chemicals to be released.
My manager wants Avent removed from our pumping list. I don't have strong feelings about that particular pump, but hesitate changing handouts over one mother's complaint.
Does anyone provide a listing to parents of particular pumps they recommend?
Thoughts? Carolyn Schindewolf, BS, LCCE, IBCLC
