It sounds like there is some upper respiratory obstruction going on,
suprasternal retractions usually occur when the obstruction is above the
level of the cricoid cartilage. Things that could be happening:
laryngeal web
laryngomalacia
choanal stenosis or atresia.
Does the baby have any stridor during feeding? Stridor is a high pitched
whistling/chirping noise that represents air being forced through a
narrowing airway. Tipping the baby's head back will relieve the stridor
if it's due to laryngomalacia.
And head extension, prone positioning for feeding, and short frequent
feeds can help infants with any of the above conditions to breastfeed
better.
Mom can ask for an ENT referral for her baby. She can insist, or she can
change pediatricians. I agree with you that babies should not snore.
