Hi, Martina and All: I believe I may have posted this information before on
Lactnet, but it may bear repeating. There is a wonderful oral-maxillofacial
surgeon in the Chicago area (NW suburbs) who willingly evaluates babies for
possible tongue-tie on referral from us local LCs. He does a cold laser
procedure (eliminates all bleeding!) in the office with the baby in a car seat on
the exam table with parents present. His fee is very modest and covered by
insurance.
He has talked to us on a number of occasions on how he determines the need
for a frenulectomy and how he does the procedure. He grasps the tip of the
baby's tongue in his gloved hand and begins lasering the frenulum and
underlying musculature until he feels the tongue "break free" from its
restriction, then stops. He says he can literally "feel" when he has released
the tongue. It is his opinion that most all breastfeeding problems related to a
tongue tie involve a posterior tie and therefore it is important to cut until one
feels the tongue release.
We have tried to talk him into publishing his technique, but so far he has not
done so.
His contact information is:
