Perhaps the marketing of breastmilk substitutes through Wal-Mart
is a positive sign. Perhaps this is being done because the manufacturers are
having difficulty marketing their product through hospitals, anticipate more
difficulty, and are looking for alternatives. Marketing breastmilk substitutes
in stores removes the apparent endorsement of doctors and nurses. Even if an
MD, RN or RD were to do the presentation, consumers would recognize the
commercial influences and it won’t have the same cachet, prestige or influence
as it does in the hospital environment. Of course professionals should be
mindful (or reminded) of the ethical problems of such marketing.

James Akre argues (I think effectively) in The Problem with Breastfeeding that the
manufacturers of breastmilk substitutes are less the problem than is the
cultural acceptance of the substitutes. We need to focus more on the culture
than on prohibition of a product. Ending the marketing of breastmilk
substitutes in hospitals and medical offices is an important step in the
cultural change. It means removing them as something endorsed by the medical
community to the lesser status of something sold by stores trying to make a
profit. Consumers will get the difference.

Breastfeeding is the biological norm for infants. It is a relationship that provides food, connection, protection from illness to the baby and stress reducing hormones to the mother.
