For me there is a very important factor that gets left out. If this was
mentioned in a previous post about this subject, and I missed it, I will
apologize now. I focus on asymmetrical latch even with a nipple sandwich.
No
matter whether it is called nipple sandwich, U or C hold, I ALWAYS leave
enough
space on the bottom (where the chin is) for the chin. Therefore, the top
of
the sandwich can be held at the diameter of the areola, but the BOTTOM
needs
additional space for the chin. Therefore, it is an asymmetrical sandwich
as
well. Sandwiching at the diameter on the bottom of the areola (again where
the
chin is) does not work well at all. The most important part of latch is
the
1/2" to 1" of areolar tissue between the mom's nipple and baby's lower lip.
