I can only compete with remembering the x-ray machine for shoes... Glasgow
area in the 1960s being much more like early 50s in the rest of the UK. I
too, loved seeing my toes wiggle through the x-ray machine.
I was proudly fed formula in cans, as I was from a poor neighbourhood, and
'shop bought' was a sign of wealth. Further complicated by my inter-family
cross adoption times 3. (Don't ask.)
However, we did actually run the corner shop and I well remember sitting in
the car, on top of packets of sweets, stuffed in any space at the last
moment, after the cash and carry run was over. Many a happy time I spent ,
in the car, under my Gran's feet in the footwell, on top of cigarette boxes
in the back of the estate (stationwagon) and generally stuffed in whatever
tiny space was afforded.
However, that is beaten cold, by my memories of being in the back of a
loaded tipper truck, as we made our way merrily to the dump. We were only
allowed to ride on full loads however, as it was too dangerous if the lorry
was empty...
We did however, have a special treat at a cafe once a week. We were allowed
to drop sugar cubes in our glass of coca-cola - it made it fizz! All
veggies came from cans - as did most fruits. The only raw vegetables I saw
my entire childhood, was onion, potato and cabbage. We kids preffered
tinned fruit, as fresh stuff tasted funny.
Lanarkshire, where I'm from, still has a dental specialist, for dealing with
babies with melted teeth, from Coca-Cola and "Irn-Bru" being out in their
baby bottles. Highest heart attack area in the whole of Europe. Until vast
monies poured in recently by Scottish Parliament, lowest breastfeeding rates
in Europe. Still fall over in shock, when back there, to see babies
chugging coca-cola out of the bottles....
