Many have been questioning why a mother would be pumping this much at this
age in the child. With the down syndrome children I have worked with and
another child that has a syndrome very much alike in certain characteristics
these children relied on breastmilk for their main souce of nutrition for a long
time. One child we had to send off for evaluation from someone who could
properly assess the value of the breastmilk as many were telling her to quit
nursing and the child would eat more. Of course now at 2.5 years she is of
normal size and eats well, not to par and still nurses 3 times per day but up
until almost a year ago mom fed every 3 hours at least during the day and
maybe one time at night. She was given vitamins and assessed frequently for
other issues but the breastmilk kept her going until she had the ability to chew
and swallow which is sometimes missing or lacking in these children. Both of
these kids needed extensive OT to be where they are today.
