There was an interesting article in Parade magazine this weekend about
animal behavior. One was about how pregnant elephants in
East Africa eat a certain tree called the boraginaceae in order to induce
labor. One had supposedly walked 17 miles out of her way to eat of the tree
and then gave birth a few days later. Local women drink a tea made of the
leaves of this tree in order to induce labor as well. I am wondering if
there are any plants that animals eat in order to stimulate milk production
and if that is why the same plant is used by indigenous people for the same
purpose? Probably not evidence based by any fancy study, but fascinating
nonetheless.
Off to work now.
