Christina, this sounds like maybe a dimpled nipple. There are photos of
this in The Breastfeeding Atlas. What it is, is when a mother has the
center part of her nipple folded inward. It is not always in the middle
of the nipple face, I have seen them sort of to the side of the nipple
face. The skin is folded inward and every time baby sucks or she pumps,
it is pulled outward. It gets raw and then folds back inward and stays
moist and sticks together again. Every time she nurses, unless she is
treated it properly, it sticks back together and then rips open. If this
mom has a dimpled nipple, after nursing or pumping when it is still
open, she can dry it carefully (sometimes can blow on it) and then puts
lansinoh or polysporin antibiotic cream on the pink inner skin. This
keeps the skin from sticking back together and getting ripped back open.
Eventually the dimpled area forms new skin and no longer sticks together
and all. The skin that is pulled out from the dimple looks very bright
pink after nursing or pumping and it is often kind of bloody for a few
days until new skin is formed. Moms say it is sore at first but once it
heals over and forms new skin is not sore.
