Hat theory, newborns lose the most heat via their heads (large surface
area.)
Cold stresses the newborn - drying infant, putting a hat on and putting baby
skin to skin with mom (if infant is stable), covering mom and baby with
warm blanket, is the simplest and least expensive way to help baby
thermoregulate.
I put newborn thermoregulation into google and there are tons of refs, esp
skin to skin and hats.
The hat project was from the
www.savethechildren.org/campaigns/caps-to-the-capital/malawi-and-bangaladesh.html
It was a campaign to draw President Bush's attention to the health and well
being needs of newborn babies worldwide. There is a connection to a video
of Kangaroo mother care in Malawi. Pat in SNJ
