The nurse manager here asked me to post and ask if any hospitals have a
policy regarding mother's nursing sister or family member breastfeeding a
newborn baby.
We had a Spanish speaking family here and the mother's sister was
breastfeeding her own baby and breastfed the new baby as well.
We realize the risks of nursing another baby if the nursing mom has any health
risks such as hepatitis or HIV. However, the nurses were so surprised they did
not know what to say. Our manager told the family that we did not encourage
this, and that the mother's own milk is best for the baby. She was wondering if
any other hospitals have encountered this, and if so, what was done. Any
hospitals have written policies about this?
