Having sat in the burn unit for over 2 weeks with my husband and saw may
other children that were there as well, the nutrional needs for a bun patient
can be exhausting...protein is especially important as is fluid intake. However,
at only 8 weeks of age her milk is still in such a young state I could see the
concern for nutrition. However, the young children I saw that were nursing
while in the unit were not given any other foods some IV fluids on intake to
offset any concerns about fluid balance issues. I think as long as the child is
allowed to nurse whenever and the burns are not effecting this she should be
OK for what I learned while I was there. However, I would try to look for a
specialist around the area that can follow the child nutrionally that
understands the importance of breastmilk and the heaing needs of a burned
person.
