Kim, this isn't OT at all. Elevated prolactin levels can prevent pregnancy.
Be aware that cabergoline and bromocriptine have been used to lower
prolactin levels so that women can conceive. I have not found a lot of
research showing that this in turn prevents lactation, but the N of 1 mother
with whom I worked who took bromocriptine to become pregnant, did wind up
with a very low supply; hardly anything at all. Dr. Hale felt the use of
bromocriptine during pregnancy was a big factor.
So just a suggestion that if this OB nurse wants to lactate, she may want to
avoid using these drugs to achieve pregnancy, or perhaps quit them as early
as possible after conceiving to maximize her body's chances of preparing for
bf.
There may be more info on Dr. Hale's forum wrt these drugs in pregnancy (we
know they suppress lactation postpartum).
